DTF Gang Sheets Explained: How to Pack a Sheet & Save

If you press shirts for a boutique, a team, a church, or a side hustle, gang sheets are the single biggest lever on your transfer costs. This guide covers what a gang sheet actually is, what ours cost (real checkout numbers, not marketing numbers), and how to pack one so every square inch you pay for ends up on a garment.

What is a gang sheet?

A gang sheet is one large DTF (direct-to-film) transfer sheet packed with as many designs as you can fit — different artwork, different sizes, left chests next to full backs next to sleeve hits, all printed in a single run. Instead of paying per design, you pay for the area of the sheet. When the sheet arrives, you cut out each transfer and press them one at a time, whenever you need them. DTF transfers store well, so many shops print a month of designs on one roll and press on demand.

Ours print in-house in Elk Grove on a roll with a 23-inch printable width — so a "sheet" is always 23 inches wide, and you choose how long it runs, from 12 inches up to a full 144-inch (12-foot) roll.

What gang sheets cost here — the same numbers as checkout

Pricing is flat: $0.0289 per square inch for standard film, with a $5.00 minimum order. Glitter film is $0.05/sq in. The table below is pulled from the exact pricing code our builder and checkout run on:

Do the math on a typical run and the appeal is obvious: a 23"×24" sheet ($15.95) comfortably fits a dozen or more adult-front designs plus a scatter of left-chest logos — pennies-per-transfer territory once it's packed well. Which brings us to the actual skill.

How to pack a sheet efficiently

Since you pay by area, packing is where the savings live. A few rules that our own builder follows — and that you should follow if you're arranging a sheet by hand:

• Mix sizes to fill gaps. Big full-back prints leave awkward side columns and corners — that's exactly where left-chest logos, sleeve prints, and name-and-number sets belong. Small pieces tucked beside big ones are effectively free real estate.
• Rotate designs to fit. A tall design turned 90° often slots into a wide gap that would otherwise be wasted. Our builder's Auto Build tries both orientations of every design automatically and typically reaches 80%+ sheet fill.
• Keep spacing tight but cuttable. The builder defaults to a 0.1" gap between designs and a 0.1" margin at the sheet edges (both adjustable up to 1"). You need enough room to cut between transfers with scissors — you don't need more.
• Duplicate instead of re-uploading. Need 20 of the same logo? Place it once, then duplicate — same file, consistent size, faster grid.
• Shorter sheet beats emptier sheet. The sheet only needs to be as long as your bottom-most design. Packing tighter doesn't just fit more — it can drop you into a shorter, cheaper sheet size.

Two ways to order: the builder vs. uploading a finished sheet

Option 1 — the free online builder at /shop/gang-sheet. Upload individual designs (PNG, JPG, PDF, SVG, AI, EPS, or PSD), then drag, resize, rotate, and duplicate them on the 23"-wide canvas — or hit Auto Build and let the packer arrange everything for you. The price updates live as the sheet grows. Every raster design gets a resolution badge (Optimal ≥ 300 DPI, Good ≥ 250 DPI), the pre-checkout checklist warns if anything is under 150 DPI, and there's a free AI upscaler and background remover built in.

Option 2 — upload a finished sheet at /shop/gang-sheet/upload. Already built your sheet in another tool? Upload the finished PNG or JPG and we auto-detect the sheet size: if the file carries trustworthy DPI metadata we size it from that, and otherwise we assume it was built at the standard 23" roll width and derive the height from the aspect ratio — exactly what files from other gang-sheet builders expect. You see the detected size and the price instantly, billed by the inch of sheet length (12" minimum).

UV DTF: gang sheets for hard surfaces

Regular DTF is for fabric. For cups, tumblers, glass, laptops, and other hard, smooth surfaces, we run UV DTF gang sheets — UV-cured permanent transfers that apply peel-and-stick, no heat press required, and bond permanently to the surface. UV DTF sheets are 22.5" wide and priced by fixed length tiers rather than per square inch:

Same packing logic applies — mix your tumbler wraps, logo decals, and small accents on one sheet. Just remember UV DTF is permanent: once it bonds to a hard surface, it doesn't come off cleanly.

Pressing basics

When your (fabric) gang sheet arrives: cut out a design, position it on the garment, and press at 300°F for about 10–15 seconds with medium-firm pressure, then peel cold — let the film cool before you pull it.
